A man was arrested for dating and scamming 35 women using fake birthdays

Imagine getting arrested for soliciting gifts for your fake birthday – yup, this really happened IRL. Takashi Miyagawa was a 39-year-old Japanese man who scammed 35 women as he pretended to date them and faked his birthday.

Miyagawa had no fixed address and was a part-time salesman for a marketing company. He met his victims while selling hydrogen showerheads and other products. He established each relationship under the impression that marriage was in the picture.

Allegedly, Miyagawa told three different women that his birthday was in February, July, and another in April. However, he revealed his actual birthday to be on November 13.

According to The Independent, the scammer accumulated gifts from the women he dated, with the combined total amounting to 100,000 Japanese Yen (approximately 44,479 pesos) along with a £200 suit (approximately 13,435 pesos).

Miyagawa’s victims uncovered his scheme and formed a group called ‘Victims Association.’ Afterwards, per local Japanese news site Mainichi Broadcasting System (MBS), they reported Miyagawa’s scheme to the police back in February.

Authorities arrested Miyagawa with fraud charges, but the case is ongoing since they believe that there might be more victims.
