A Filipino fashion student designed the national costume of a Miss Universe candidate
It’s incredible how social media can easily connect people from all over the world. In this case, it has come to Miss Universe Cameroon Angele Kossinda’s attention that a Filipino fashion student was behind her national costume for the pageant.
On May 4, Kossinda posted a carousel of photos showing screenshots of reports about Kennedy John Gasper, the 20-year-old college student who designed her national costume.
‘I’m overwhelmed by the Filipino and media for the support. Indeed a national costume represents your [country’s] legacy, culture and image.’ Kossinada said in her caption. ‘And to me the most important thing is to find someone who could best represent it in an outfit or costume no matter your origins – this is what we learn from beauty pageant – inclusion – tolerance – unity!’
Gasper is currently in his third year of college at the Central Luzon State University (CLSU) in Isabela. He is taking up fashion and textile technology, majoring in fashion design.
CLSU published a congratulatory post for Gasper on their Facebook account, with the caption, ‘At the age of 20, he has proven himself as an outstanding student and fashion designer.’
The 69th Miss Universe Competition will be held on May 17 in Florida, where Miss Philippines Rabiya Mateo will be joining her.
