Instagram seeks to hide like counts to improve user’s mental health

From filtering unwanted messages to allowing users to display their preferred pronouns, Instagram continues to make its platform convenient to its users. The app’s recent announcement is about the option of hiding like counts to recognize if it can depressurize people’s experiences.

On Wednesday, Instagram gave its users the “Hide Like Count” option to conceal all the number of likes from every post on their feed. Another option is to hide it from others, so they won’t see how many double-taps other posts receive. This option will help the user focus on posting content instead of focusing on numbers, as per Instagram’s official blog post.

Turning on the feature is easy enough. Users can simply head to Settings and visit the Post section to toggle the like and view counts. This control will be applicable to every post that appears on the user’s feed.

Cognitive neurologist Ofir Turel explained to PBS NewsHour that hiding like counts will affect how people use the app. The feature will make the app a safer environment since it would prevent how users will compare their statistics to others.

‘Changing the way people view like counts is a big shift. We’ll continue working on new ways to give people more choice, so they feel good about the time they spend on our apps,’ Instagram concluded on their blogpost.

Instagram rolled out the new feature on Wednesday, but it will reach other users worldwide over time as per TechCrunch.
