Instagram’s latest feature allows users to display their preferred pronouns
Expressing yourself on Instagram is limited to posting snippets of your life on the square tiles and through IG stories. However, the photo-sharing app opens a more inclusive space by allowing its users to add their preferred pronouns in their bio.
Earlier today, Instagram posted via Twitter an announcement on another new feature for the app following its recent safety feature update this year.

Instagram’s VP of Product Vishal Shah also shared on Twitter, ‘Now you can add pronouns to your profile with a new field. It’s another way to express yourself on Instagram and we’ve seen a lot of people adding pronouns already, so hopefully this makes it even easier. Available in a few countries today with plans for more.’
According to TechCrunch, you can set your desired pronoun by pressing “Edit Profile,” then browse through the list of items until you find an empty Pronouns field. You can pick up to four pronouns that you prefer to be called by.
Users can currently choose from the following pronouns below:
- co / cos
- e / ey / em / eir
- fae / faer
- he / him / his
- she / her / hers
- mer / mers
- ne / nir / nirs
- nee / ner / ners
- per / pers
- they / them / theirs
- thon / thons
- ve / ver / vis
- vi / vir
- xe / xem / xyr
- ze / zie / zir / hir
Whatever pronoun you pick will appear beside your name in a slightly lighter and smaller font. You can also choose if you want to show this publicly or exclusively for your followers. Users who can’t find their preferred pronouns on the list above can opt to send a request through this form.
According to Mashable, Instagram’s latest feature is only available in a few English-speaking countries as of writing, but the app has plans to roll it out to other countries soon.
