Israel tweeted rocket emojis to show magnitude of Gaza conflict

Some people use emojis when they can’t find the words to express themselves anymore. However, you wouldn’t expect that to be the case when it comes to the State of Israel’s official Twitter account. Israel tweeted rocket emojis to symbolize the rockets fired towards Israel by a Gaza-based militant group called Hamas.

Israel posted a thread composed of 12 tweets and 3,168 rocket emojis. They also tweeted their explanation, ‘Just to give you all some perspective, these *hand pointing above emoji* are the total amount of rockets shot at Israeli civilians. Each one of these rockets is meant to kill. #IsraelUnderAttack’ 

‘Make no mistake. Every rocket has an address. What would you do if that address was yours?’ the account closed the thread with this question.

A Twitter user replied to Israel’s post by sending a bunch of children emojis and said, ‘i did one with the number of kids you’ve killed.’ Another reply showed a chart that pointed out the deaths and injuries caused by the Israeli-Palestinian battle between 2008 and 2020.

On may 10, Hamas has fired over 3,200 rockets towards Israel, while the Israeli military has launched hundreds of airstrikes. Around 200 Palestinians, including 59 children and 35 women, have been killed. There were also 1,300 wounded people, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Additionally, 10 people in Israel, including a soldier and a 2-year-old boy, have also been killed due to the rocket attacks, according to USA Today.

Last Saturday, an Israeli airstrike destroyed a 10-story building in Gaza City that housed international news organizations such as The Associated Press and Al Jazeera. Israel claims that Hamas operated from inside the building but has yet to provide evidence as per AP news.

Reporters Without Borders asked the International Criminal Court to investigate if the attack constitutes a war crime. RSF secretary-general Christophe Deloire said, ‘Deliberately targeting media outlets constitutes a war crime… By intentionally destroying media outlets, the Israel Defence Forces are not only inflicting unacceptable material damage on news operations.’

‘They are also, more broadly, obstructing media coverage of a conflict that directly affects the civilian population. We call on the International Criminal Court’s prosecutor to determine whether these airstrikes constitute war crimes,’ he added.
