Netflix might launch video games sometime in the future
Looking forward to binge-watching shows on Netflix may seem exciting, but knowing the possibility of the platform expanding its enterprise is something else. The video streaming company is reportedly opening its doors to the video games industry.
According to The Information, Netflix indicates that they have plans to go beyond producing films as it has recently been recruiting “veteran game industry executives” to be part of their team. The report also shares that the steaming company allegedly considers offering a subscription for a “bundle” of games similar to Apple Arcade, as per Polygon.
A Netflix spokesperson released a statement to Polygon, ‘Our members value the variety and quality of our content. It’s why we’ve continually expanded our offering — from series to documentaries, film, local language originals and reality TV.’
The spokesperson continued by explaining that they’re excited to do more interactive entertainment with stories that their audience enjoys engaging with, like Bandersnatch, You v. Wild, Stranger Things, La Casa de Papel, and To All the Boys.
Netflix already produced “interactive entertainment” a few times, like Black Mirror’s Bandersnatch film in 2018 and an episode from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt in 2020. The streaming app also partnered with third-party developers to produce a game based on the Stranger Things series. A video game, Stranger Things 3: The Game, was launched in 2019, while a Stranger Things mobile game was launched in 2020 as per NME.
With that said, even if Netflix has no official announcements regarding the matter, we may have to hold on to a small piece of hope for them to push through with this initiative.
