Oscar winning film ‘Soul’ is getting a prequel about 22
Do you remember the adorable abstract soul floating around as Joe Gardener entered The Great Before? 22, the soul paired with Joe has a prequel called 22 vs. Earth.
Directed by Kevin Nolting, the 6-minute short film follows 22, a cynical soul who has been the longest to remain in The Great Before. According to Mashable, the spinoff will answer the reason behind her distaste for the human world. In the film’s trailer, we can see 22 forming a gang called the Apocalypse, composed of tiny souls as she prevents them from going to Earth.
The Great Before is the place where unborn humans go through a process to figure out their “spark” and prepare themselves before heading to Earth. The tiny souls are guided by soul trainers called Jerrys, who are the ones in charge of keeping them in order. In the film, 22 was determined to stay in that place until she enjoyed the mundane things while occupying Joe’s body.
Pixar’s Soul won two awards during the Oscars earlier this year. The film bagged Best Animated Film and Best Original Score. It was praised by critics for its inclusion of contemporary Black culture and jazz music. The short film’s release was right on time since it left viewers wondering what happened to 22 after seeing that her Earth badge was full.
Below is the first trailer of 22 vs. Earth. The short film is available to stream on Disney+.
