Starbucks apparently considers leaving Facebook for good

There’s a possibility for Starbucks to leave Facebook after the world’s largest coffee company said that it was appalled by the constant hate comments they receive on their racial and social justice posts. The incidents left Starbucks to assess their organic presence on the platform and whether they should have a presence on the platform entirely.

Facebook employees who manage the social network’s connection with Starbucks shared that the company has become “frustrated by the hate and intolerance on the platform that it may remove its Facebook page” as per internal discussions seen by BuzzFeed News.

‘Anytime they post (organically) in regards to social issues or their mission & values work (e.g., BLM, LGBTQ, sustainability/climate change, etc.) they are overwhelmed by negative/insensitive, hate speech related comments on their posts,’ a Facebook employee wrote to their colleagues.

In 2020, a stream of major companies took part in the #StopHateForProfit campaign with the goal to pause their advertising on Facebook in order to convince the platform to stop hate speech and disinformation, according to CNBC. Joining Starbucks in the campaign were Verizon, Unilever, Coca-Cola, Honda, and Diageo.

Starbucks spokesperson Sanja Gould made it clear that their company stands against hate speech but didn’t confirm if they have plans on removing its Facebook page.

In a statement, Facebook spokesperson Dani Lever explained that Facebook offers tools to limit certain content and control comments on their posts. However, Gould shared, ‘While some changes have been implemented, we believe more can be done to create welcoming and inclusive online communities.’

‘We work collaboratively with all companies we do business with to ensure any advertising done on our behalf is in alignment with our brand standards,’ she continued.

If Starbucks will push through with the decision to remove its company from Facebook, it would be one of the largest companies to cut ties with the social network. In 2018, the Cambridge Analytica scandal led some companies to ditch the platform like Mozilla, SpaceX and Tesla, and Playboy, among others. In 2020, Viber removed all Facebook touchpoints from its app due to the lack of privacy and mishandling of data.
