Twitter could feature Facebook-style reactions soon

Remember the transition from the OG star reaction to the now heart-shaped button on Twitter? The tech giant is apparently working on giving users the option to react to tweets using Facebook-style emojis.

App researcher Jane Wong announced on Saturday that Twitter is working on the so-called Tweet Reaction. It features “Likes”, “Cheer”, “Hmm”, “Sad”, and “Haha” icons. She explained that the icons are in their WIP (work-in-progress) stage, which shows generic hearts instead of the corresponding reactions.

A few months ago, a user shared that Twitter has been conducting surveys that hinted at adding emoji reactions to the platform. A Twitter spokesperson spoke to The Verge about the research, ‘We’re exploring additional ways for people to express themselves in conversations happening on Twitter.’

 

At the same time, Twitter’s Chief Design Officer Dantley Davis acknowledged a user’s tweet proposing several reaction emojis instead of a single heart button. The design chief responded by saying that the platform will offer something soon.

Facebook’s initial Reaction features in 2016 that joined the Like button are the Love, Haha, Wow, Sad, and Angry reactions. The Care emoji was then added in 2020 for users to show extra support during the coronavirus pandemic.

While there are no official announcements from Twitter, Wong is an app developer who has been known for announcing developments in the tech industry. She already shared predictions about Twitter’s innovations like hiding tweet replies and a Tip Jar feature to monetize your tweets.
