A Filipino photojournalist was a finalist for 2021 Pulitzer Prize
Different Filipinos are getting acknowledged for their hard work lately, like Bruno Mars having 5 diamond certified singles and Yuka Saso winning a golf major. In the field of photography, Filipino photojournalist Ezra Acayan landed a spot as a finalist for the Feature Photography category of the 2021 Pulitzer Prize.
The photo that earned Acayan a nomination was a shot for Getty Images at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on March 14, 2020. In the photo, the airport security staff is seen attempting to control a crowd as Filipinos were hoping to catch a flight out of Manila before the lockdown.

Acayan’s work was one of the fifteen photos that are considered as a “thorough coverage of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the global community”, as seen on Pulitzer’s official website.
The eventual winner of the Pulitzer is Emilio Morennati of the Associated Press. His winning work is a series of images that depicts the lives of elderly people in Spain who are struggling amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Even if Acayan didn’t nab the win, he has bagged other achievements in photography – he won the World Press Photo award, the US National Press Photographers Association, the Pictures of the Year International, and Pictures of the Year Asia, as per ABS-CBN News.
Last month, Acayan went viral for a photo series featuring nurses from Tondo Medical Center who are assigned to take care of COVID-19 patients. The collage compares their faces before and after their long shifts.
