A Filipino-made satellite will be sent to outer space in 2023
Outer space has been receiving a lot of attention lately. The solar system was reportedly a new shooting location for both US and Russian films, while NASA has shared photos of shining clouds on Mars. Joining them in space soon is the Philippines, which will send its biggest Filipino-made satellite in 2023.
Referred to as MULA or Multispectral Unit for Land Assessment, it can capture operational-quality photos of around 100,000 square km of land every day, as per Inquirer. To paint a picture of how enormous the Earth Observation satellite is, it weighs 130 kilograms compared to other microsatellites that weigh around 50 kilograms.

In a follow-up tweet from STAMINA4Space, a space research & development program in the PH, it explained that MULA is a prioritized agenda under the Advanced Satellite and Know-how Transfer for the Philippines (ASP) project funded by the Department Of Science and Technology (DOST).
The scientists and engineers behind the space project are from the University of the Philippines Diliman and the DOST-Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI), in coordination with the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA).
John Labrador, MULA’s project manager, said to Rappler that the satellite doubles as an astronaut in space. ‘We can think of this spacecraft as a Filipino astronaut tasked to take images of our natural resources while monitoring aircraft and ship activity in our country at the same time.’
‘We aim to significantly increase the land area captured by this satellite compared to our previous ones, effectively increasing the information gathered from the produced images,’ he added.
