BTS had a dance-off with a ‘robot dog’
It wasn’t long ago when K-pop sensation BTS had a collab with McDonald’s for a meal that included glorified chicken nuggets which caused a frenzy worldwide. This time, they happen to be brand ambassadors for Hyundai, and they’re celebrating it with a dance-off with a robot dog.
Hyundai recently acquired Boston Dynamics, the company behind the viral commercial robots. The automotive company released a video presenting BTS interacting with a robot dog called Spot, and later on, shows clips of them grooving altogether.
In another video, the members of BTS were represented by seven Spot robot canines as they danced along the K-pop band’s track titled IONIQ: I’m On It. Erick Whitman, a Boston Dynamics roboticist said, ‘There were a lot of challenges around getting the vision of our choreographer, who’s used to dealing with human dancers, into our software.’
‘Everything had to be worked out in advance and scripted precisely,’ he continued. ‘Robots have the advantage over humans in that they’re very repeatable: Once you get it right, it stays right. But they have the disadvantage that you have to tell them every little detail. They don’t improvise at all.’
