The ‘world’s first weight loss device’ uses magnets to shut your jaw
Researchers from New Zealand and the UK developed a tool “to help fight the global obesity epidemic.” Case in point: the DentalSlim Diet Control. They claim that it’s apparently the world’s first weight loss device.
The device is made up of a magnetized tool and customized bolts, placed by a dental professional on the upper and lower back teeth. It provides a 2mm gap that’s enough for a person to open their mouth and to speak and breathe properly. It also prevents people from eating solid food.
Otago and UK researchers have developed a world-first weight-loss device to help fight the global obesity epidemic: an intra-oral device that restricts a person to a liquid diet. Read more: https://t.co/eLhXwipiqs pic.twitter.com/Of6v3uvVbX

Seven healthy obese women from New Zealand participated in the trial of the weight loss device for two weeks. They went through a low-calorie liquid diet and they lost around 6.36 kg or 5.1% of their body weight.
‘It is a non-invasive, reversible, economical and attractive alternative to surgical procedures,’ Lead Researcher Paul Brunton from the University of Otago said.‘The fact is, there are no adverse consequences with this device.’
Even if studies were conducted, the announcement of the research gained flak on Twitter. A user questioned the researchers’ view on fat people, while another one described it as a “torture device.”
Putting aside the fucked nature of this and what it says about the creators and their view of fat people, how is it actually effective?
You can still maintain the same calorie intake via liquids of that's what it's aiming to reduce

A world-first and world-last, I sincerely hope. This is a torture device and you should be embarrassed to be promoting it, let alone to be associated with it.

Others expressed their disbelief at the University of Otago’s tweet by responding with mocking images. A user replied with a picture of a body wrapped in tape indicating that it’s a device for them to stop tweeting.
Another user posted a photo of The Rack, a piece of medieval torture equipment. It was described as a parody device for people to become taller, a clap back to the weight loss tool.

Brilliant, I'd like to submit my idea for a device to help short people be taller. pic.twitter.com/5WYp26VbJ3

In a follow-up tweet following the criticisms, the researchers clarified that the device isn’t a quick or long-term weight loss tool. Instead, it is designed to “assist people who need to undergo surgery and who cannot have the surgery until they have lost weight.”
They also explained that the magnets can be removed after two to three weeks, ‘They could then have a period with a less restricted diet and then go back into treatment. This would allow for a phased approach to weight loss supported by advice from a dietician.’
