Aquino passed away at 61 due to renal disease secondary to diabetes on June 24, 2021. He was then laid to rest at the Manila Memorial Park beside his parents, pro-democracy icon Benigno Aquino Jr. and former President Corazon Aquino.
Pope Francis was welcomed by Noynoy Aquino when he arrived in the Philippines for his papal visit in 2015. Hundreds of thousands of Filipinos lined up along the streets of Manila to catch a glimpse of him in the Popemobile. The pontiff also held an open-air Mass at the Rizal Park.
