Pasig River is considered the world’s leading plastic polluter of oceans
When it comes to international recognition, the Philippines doesn’t fail to land a spot at the table. However, this particular distinction isn’t exactly something to be proud of. The Pasig River was named as the most polluting body of water, as published in the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
Titled More than 1000 rivers account for 80% of global riverine plastic emission into the ocean, the AAAS study examined the source of most of the plastics that are currently floating in the oceans. It stated, ‘The largest contributing country estimated by our model was the Philippines with 4820 rivers emitting 356,371 MT year.’

A Netherland-based environmental organization called Ocean Cleanup conducted scientific research on plastic pollution in the world’s oceans, as per Manila Times. They discovered that 80 recent of the pollution is found in the country.
On Ocean Cleanup’s website, they have a virtual map that presents plastic emissions to the world’s ocean and displays data on mismanaged plastic per year. Once you hover over the image of the PH, details on the plastic pollution from different rivers will appear.
The condition of Pasig River isn’t a priority at the moment due to the pandemic. While there are plans and projects for the river, other people see it as a waste disposal area to throw their garbage, an unnamed Filipino environmental scientist told PhilStar Life.
‘The government should take an integrated approach to rehabilitating Pasig River,’ the environmental scientist said. ‘Solutions should be encompassing and covering social, environmental and economical aspects, to make Pasig River sustainable again.’
