Pope Francis was caught shaking hands with ‘Spider-Man’
While a local Spider-Man was seen in Marikina City last week, another person who posed as the Marvel character was spotted in the Vatican City. However, the superhero wasn’t there to fight crime but to actually meet the Pope.
During the Pope’s papal audience this week, a man named Mattia Villardita was seen wearing a Spider-Man suit while he was seated in the VIP section, as per People.
After the service, Villardita greeted Pope Francis, and the two proceeded to shake hands. He shared to the Associated Press that he even gifted a Spider-Man mask to the pontiff “as a sign, to tell him that through these eyes I daily see pain from sick children in hospitals.”
Some assumed that it was a publicity stunt to promote the next Spider-Man movie, but Villardita was invited to attend because of his work. He actually goes to hospitals while wearing the suit to brighten up the day of sick children.
Villardita continues to head an association for other hospital volunteers who pose as superheroes amid the COVID-19 pandemic. He also works at a terminal shipping company.
