This student graduated college by selling ‘chicharon’ and ‘mani’

The achievements of many Filipino students are proof of their hard work – from creating a video game, designing a gown for a Miss U candidate, and even landing a spot at universities abroad. Recently, a heartwarming post made rounds on social media when a student shared the small business that helped her get through college.

Jemaima Joy Salas is an entrepreneurship student at Laguna University who sold chicharon and mani to provide for herself. The 25-year-old pursued her humble business after her parents separated and her grandmother, who supported her, passed away in 2014,  as per GMA News.

On Salas’ Facebook post, she included graduation photos that showed her holding chicharon, mani, and a bottle of vinegar with chili. She also wrote an appreciation message to her late grandmother, ‘Isa ka sa naging inspiration ko kung bakit ako naging matatag sa buhay dahil noon nabubuhay ka nakita ko talaga yun sakripisyo at pagmamahal mo sakin maibigay mo lang yun mga needs ko.’

(You were one of my inspirations who reminded me to stay strong in life. When you were still alive, I really saw the love and sacrifice that you made to help me with my needs.)

The students and faculty members who were her usual buyers or suki also got a shoutout, ‘Sa mga guards na di napapagod ipagbitbit ako ng bayong ko maraming salamat po. Sa mga suki ko studyante na walang sawang bumibili na halos ubusin at saidin araw araw ang paninda ko.’

(Thank you so much to the guards who never got tired of assisting me with my bayong, and to my schoolmates who supported me by buying every day.)

The post ended in true chicharon entrepreneur fashion with a witty hashtag that reads, “#AteCharonSigningOff.”
