This talkshow segment is getting ‘cancelled’ for saying ‘balut’ is disgusting

Talkshow host of The Late Late Show, James Corden, has been receiving backlash for a segment on the show called Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts. An online petition for its removal has been circulating due to its unfavorable depiction of balut and other Asian delicacies.

The segment shows Corden and a celebrity guest with an array of food on a table. They select a certain delicacy and direct it to the person who has to answer a hard question. If the person prefers not to respond, they would have to eat the food in front of them.

The assortment includes balut, century-old eggs, and chicken feet – which are all Asian cuisines. A particular episode shows Corden and Jimmy Kimmel describing the food as “terrible,” “disgusting,” and “horrifying.”

Balut, as Filipinos know it, is a local street food composed of a fertilized duck egg that is incubated, hard-boiled, or steamed and can be eaten directly from the shell.

The online petition came about after a TikTok user named Kim Saira shared a viral video accusing the segment of racism. She showed particular scenes from the show and claimed that it was disrespectful.

The petition states that Corden’s segment perpetuates anti-Asian racism at a time when a rise of violence is happening to AAPI communities. It also requests a formal apology from the host, to change the food or remove the segment entirely, and to donate funds to Asian American organizations.

Over 28,000 people have signed the petition as of writing.
