Two Miss Earth PH candidates believe transwomen should have their own pageant
Beauty pageants open doors to many different things — by using it as a platform to speak up on social issues, and surprisingly, it also delivered memes. Recently, a national beauty pageant stirred a discussion on transgender women joining the same competition.
Miss Philippines Earth 2021 had a virtual press conference for the first batch of ladies on June 1. Candidates from Caloocan City and El Nido, Palawan, were posed with the question about transgender women joining the pageant, as per ABS-CBN News.
Miss El Nido Daena Yapparcon was opposed to the idea of the inclusion of transgender women in pageants for natural-born women. She expressed that this type of competition celebrates femininity and that transgender women should have a separate pageant.
‘I believe that transgenders should have their own beauty pageants. And it’s because to celebrate their own beauty and to let people know that…to have the respect that they deserve,’ Yapparcon said.
Having the same stand as Yapparcon, Miss Caloocan Jerimi Nuqui agreed that there should be a pageant dedicated to transgender women. She stressed that she respects the transgender community and believes in inclusivity, but their community needs a platform to showcase their own talents and beauty.
‘And as long as we respect each other’s boundaries, I think we can have a better world where a war-zone earth can turn into a beautiful and a wonderful one,’ Nuqui added.
Miss Philippines Earth organizer Lorraine Schuck shared that 68 aspiring beauty queen applicants nationwide made the final cut and will be joining the coronation night on July 25.
