10-year validity of driver’s license will start this year, says LTO

‘Cause you said forever, now I drive alone past your street,’ Olivia Rodrigo sings in the chorus of her song driver’s license. Just like the singer, you can do the same now that you have a decade worth of permit to cruise around.

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) announced earlier today that motorists would be issued a driver’s license with a 10-year validity starting October 2021. However, the validity will only be applicable to those who have a clean slate.

‘Not all license holders are entitled to this privilege,’ LTO Chief Edgar Galvante said in 2020. ‘For those who have clean records, you may enjoy not coming back for renewal not only for five years, but ten years. That is if you are not delinquent.’

The LTO will implement its enhanced demerit system. Demerits will be given to drivers with violations, while there will be incentives for drivers with a good standing.

The violations under the proposed point system are classified into three categories: “grave” for five points, “less grave” for three points, and “light” for one point.

Over 3 million driver’s license backlogs were identified when the Duterte Administration took place. Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Arthur Tugade and LTO Chief Galvante addressed the issue by ensuring that motorists were given their license cards right after their application or renewal.

From July 2016 to March 30, 2021, LTO processed 27,620,091 driver’s license cards and permits, which led to zero backlogs at present.
