This PNP tarp identifying teachers as potential predators was removed

A tarpaulin titled Oplan Kontra Lupig was put up by the Sorsogon City Police Station and the Sorsogon City Advisory Council, which sheds light on their campaign against harassment on women and children. While the initiative sounds informative, teachers were offended as they were identified as people presumed to be rapists.

The Teacher’s Dignity Coalition (TDC) posted a photo highlighting the box containing possible culprits. The list shows: strangers, fathers, uncles, siblings, friends, trusted individuals, and teachers.

PNP Chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar apologized to the teachers in a statement, acknowledging the damage caused by the drive. He said, ‘It is clearly discriminatory and insulting to our teachers who have been working hard especially in this time of pandemic.’

‘We condemn the actions of the Sorsogon City Police and the Sorsogon Advisory Council in setting an example for the Maestro as potential rapists,‘ said Romel Lleva, a principal and president of TDC-Bicol in mixed English and Bicolano. ‘We teachers are entitled to high respect and we uphold our dignity.’

Benjo Basas, the national chairperson of TDC, questioned why the profession of being a teacher was singled out as a potential rapist. He added, ‘Ano naman din kaya ang mararamdaman ng mga kapatid nating pulis kung sila halimbawa ay tinukoy sa isang module ng DepEd bilang example ng masasamang tao? Masakit din di ba? Kaya dapat maingat tayo sa mga pahayag lalo na sa publiko.’

Eleazar shared that the tarpaulin was installed in March, but it has already been removed.
