Fil-Am woman makes history, wins gold medal in individual foil match

A Filipino-American fencer of Team USA, Lee Kiefer, scored her first gold medal during the foil event of women’s fencing during the Tokyo Olympics. She defeated Inna Deriglazova of Team Russia with a 15-13 score at the Makuhari Messe Hall in Japan.

Kiefer thought her Olympic career was coming to an end when she didn’t win during the 2012 London Games and 2016 Rio Games. Meanwhile, her recent win led her to make history as the first member of the USA team to win a gold medal in the women’s individual foil discipline.

The 27-year-old had a gold medal hanging on her neck and said, ‘It’s such an incredible feeling that I share with my coach, I share with my husband, with my family, just everyone that’s been a part of this. I wish I could chop it up in little pieces and distributed it to everyone I love.’

The half Filipino champion is currently a medical student at the University of Kentucky and married to a fellow fencer from Team USA. Her father is a neurosurgeon, while her mother is also a doctor who happens to be from Tagum City, Davao.
