Microsoft is teasing Clippy’s return
Even if it’s been over two decades, Clippy’s large eyes and floating “Groucho” eyebrows are still remembered by many. It first appeared in Office 97, wherein it assisted users on Microsoft Office software, but was permanently removed on Office XP in 2001. Surprisingly, the tech giant might bring back the paperclip character soon.
‘If this gets 20k likes, we’ll replace the paperclip emoji in Microsoft 365 with Clippy,’ said Microsoft as they challenged Twitter users. The tweet garnered over 100 thousand likes as of writing. Tom Warren, Senior Editor of The Verge, replied with a Clippy gif and asked, ‘Microsoft you playin?’

Clippy has made a few revival attempts over the years. In 2019, it made an appearance in the form of an animated sticker for the MS Team’s chat software. Sadly, its short-lived comeback vanished a day after since the “brand police” from the tech company disapproved of the move.
Clippy enthusiasts even started a petition that garnered 5,248 votes. It was called Bring Back The Clippy Sticker Messaging Pack, which aims to restore the fun sticker pack that “brought back the nostalgia of a favorite Microsoft mascot.”
The petition was eventually declined by a Microsoft admin who said, ‘Clippy is flattered by all the attention but plans to continue his retirement.’
Microsoft replied to Warren’s tweet on Clippy’s possible return and said that users should just ‘wait and find out.’
