Man in BMW tried to escape police over unpaid Sogo Hotel bill
You’ve seen it in many action movies before — those cool car chase scenes that kept you on the edge of your seats. However, this IRL chase involved the police chasing a man who refused to pay his hotel bill. It’s also nowhere near ‘cool’ since innocent lives were affected.
Lt. Col. Alex Alberto, QCPD Station 10 commander, explained that the reported commotion started from the Sogo Hotel along Timog Avenue. Arvin Tan, a customer at the establishment, refused to settle his tab and even demanded P20,000 from the hotel’s employees.
The 48-year-old man was ready to escape in a black BMW when police officers arrived at the hotel. The chase went on for more than an hour from Quezon City to Manila before they caught him.
Tan hit several vehicles as he was trying to flee. He bumped police vehicles and even a cop on a motorcycle. He was also caught on camera as he crashed a tricycle along Espana Blvd. as seen in DZBB‘s Twitter thread.

Tan was eventually captured at the corner of Recto and Nicanor Reyes Avenue. Following the arrest, police recovered an ID stating that he was apparently an employee of the DILG.
During the course of the chase, Tan underwent multiple injuries, so four policemen brought him to the Quirino Memorial Medical Center for medical examination. He will face multiple charges such as estafa, disobedience, resisting arrest, reckless imprudence resulting in physical injury, and multiple damage to property.
The mentioned incident wasn’t Tan’s first encounter with the police. In 2017, he was arrested for assaulting persons of authority and other offenses after he caused a commotion at the Manila Police District (MPD).
