PNP is dropping their body fat rule in handing out promotions
The Philippine National Police (PNP) came up with a provision to measure a cop’s promotion based on their body mass index test (BMI) in 2020. PNP Chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar officially suspended the move on Tuesday.
The suspension of PNP Memorandum Circular 2020-029 or the rule that has BMI target requirements to raise officer’s ranks was confirmed in a statement. Eleazar explained, ‘In approving this, we took into consideration the balance between the workload of all our personnel in this time of pandemic and the need for them to comply with this Memorandum Circular just to be promoted.’
Eleazar pointed out that the suspension is provisional and will slowly resume when the country recovers.
Gaining weight has been a hefty challenge among police living in Southeast Asian countries. In 2019, a study showed that nearly 35 percent of personnel were overweight, while almost 10 percent were obese.
While the target BMI rule is temporarily off the table, the height qualification to enter the PNP force is still present. On May 27, President Rodrigo Duterte signed a law lowering the minimum height requirement for PNP applicants.
Republic Act 11549 or the PNP, BFP, BJMP, and BuCor Height Equality Act demands aspirants of the mentioned agencies to stand 1.57 meters (5-feet, 2 inches) for males and 1.52 meters (5-feet) for female candidates.
