Tokyo Olympics anime short ‘Tomorrow’s Leaves’ is created by Studio Ghibli veterans
The Olympic games are usually held every four years, and almost everyone wants to get a taste of the experience. While most people can’t go to Japan, an animated short film titled Tomorrow’s Leaves delivers Olympic-inspired values to your screens.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) released the anime ahead of the opening ceremony. The story follows five kids from different islands who meet on a mythical isle, following a mysterious message of a dying leaf. They also compete in light-hearted games as they travel the island’s treacherous terrain. They aim to find a way to bring back color and life to their once vibrant world.

The anime short was created by Studio Ponoc, a company formed by former Studio Ghibli animators. Director Yoshiyuki Momose said, ‘I want to make a film that will get kids excited about the Olympics. The type of world we want to see at the end of all this competition, even beyond the Olympics, will be a major theme.’
Originally premiered during the Annecy Festival in June, the short film was actually commissioned by the IOC. It originally approached the studio about the possibility to produce a feature-length anime.
Tomorrow’s Leaves was posted on Friday and has garnered over a hundred thousand views as of writing. You can watch it below for free or visit the Olympics’ YouTube channel.
