Angelina Jolie’s Instagram debut is a heartbreaking tribute to Afghanistan
Last week, several reports on the Taliban’s takeover in Afghanistan spread all over the world. At the same time, Angelina Jolie took to Instagram her first post containing a handwritten letter by an Afghan girl who is going through the country’s plight.
Apart from breaking the record of becoming the fastest user to gain one million followers on the social media platform, Jolie’s debut was important because of sharing informational posts that shed light on the country’s plight. She is also a special envoy for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
The caption on her first post read, ‘I’ve come on Instagram to share their stories and the voices of those across the globe who are fighting for their basic human rights.’
The actress also narrated that she was on the border of Afghanistan two decades ago. It was two weeks before 9/11, where she encountered Afghan refugees who escaped the Taliban. She described their displacement as “sickening” and addressed that she met many women and girls who wanted and fought for an education.
‘Like others who are committed, I will not turn away,’ she added. ‘I will continue to look for ways to help. And I hope you’ll join me.’

The following day, her second post contained statistics on displaced people. It read that 1% of the world’s population (82.4 million people) is displaced, which is almost twice as many from ten years ago.
‘I started working with displaced people because I believe passionately in human rights,’ Jolie explained in the caption. ‘Not out of charity, but out of a deep respect for them and their families, and all they continue to overcome, despite so much persecution, inequality and injustice.’
The UN Special Envoy also shared that the war in Afghanistan has lasted for decades and even compared it to the recent conflict in Ethiopia. She said that what they all have in common is the violence and denial of rights that leads to innocent families with no choice but to flee.
Jolie created her Instagram account on Friday, August 20. In a span of three days, she has garnered 7.6 million followers as of writing. She surpassed the records of Jennifer Aniston, David Attenborough, and K-pop group NCT’s Taeil.
