Ivermectin is good if you’re a horse, says FDA
In the words of that one Michael Jordan meme, ‘Stop. Stop it. Get some help’.
If you’re an anti-vaxxer or an over-enthusiastic politician who champions Ivermectin as some alternative cure to COVID-19, then you might wanna slow your roll. Over the weekend, The United States Food and Drug Administration (U.S. FDA) publicly called out purveyors of the drug with a tweet that has all the energy of ‘I’m so done with this sh*t’.
‘You are not a horse. You are not a cow. Seriously, y’all. Stop it.’, tweets the agency. The FDA also linked two articles explaining a) why Ivermectin as a solution to COVID-19 is a dumb idea and b) that the medication is intended for animals.

According to the FDA’s official statement and FAQs, Ivermectin is approved in specific doses to treat parasite infestations, such as worms. Topically (on the skin), Ivermectin can be used to treat head lice or certain skin conditions.
Still, the idea is that Ivermectin is an antiparasitic drug. COVID-19 is a virus. There’s a difference.
And while Ivermectin can be ingested by both humans and animals (in different formulations), the drug has not been approved for the prevention or treatment of COVID-19, nor is there any evidence that it actually works. Initial research has begun if it can, but the FDA has yet to review the data.
‘The FDA has not reviewed data to support the use of ivermectin in COVID-19 patients to treat or to prevent COVID-19; however, some initial research is underway. Taking a drug for unapproved use can be very dangerous. This is true of ivermectin, too.’
‘There’s a lot of misinformation around, and you may have heard that it’s okay to take large doses of ivermectin. That is wrong.’
The DOH also released a statement a few months back, saying they cannot recommend Ivermectin due to ‘insufficient scientific evidence’.
As we all (hopefully) know, taking meds without the prescription of a health official isn’t the smartest thing to do. Look, we know we’re all itching for this pandemic to be over. But at this point, staying at home and getting vaccinated are still the go-to solutions, not horse medications.
“I don’t trust what they put in the vaccine so I’m gonna ingest livestock dewormer” is so 2021.
