EJ Obiena bounces back with new PH record and silver in Paris
It has only been weeks since the Tokyo Olympics, where EJ Obiena finished at 11th place in the men’s pole vault match. On Saturday, he represented the country at the 2021 Paris Diamond League and broke a Philippine record. He cleared the 5.91 meter mark, which surpassed his previous record of 5.87 meters he set in Poland last July 2020.
The Filipino Olympian posted a video of his winning feat on his Instagram account. It showed how he was blown away by his own move as the crowd cheered loudly. In a separate post, he announced his victory of finishing at second place in the league.
‘Thank you God! And thank you to those who keep on supporting and believing despite the ups and downs… Getting there,’ he added.

While Obiena cleared 5.91m during his first attempt, he didn’t accomplish his two tries at 5.96m. He then decided to power through 6.01m, but he also failed that attempt. On the other hand, Tokyo 2020 Olympic’s pole vault champion Armand Duplantis won gold again with a 6.01m mark, and bronze medalist Christopher Nilsen also remains at the third spot at 5.81m.
The 25-year-old’s silver finish gives him the chance to qualify for the Wanda Diamond League Final in Zurich on September 8 and 9. Meanwhile, he has another tournament to compete in on September 3 in Brussels to participate in the final event.
