Voice actor behind Carl Fredricksen from ‘Up’ passed away

There will always be that one childhood movie that you keep close to your heart. Pixar’s movie Up is probably one of them. Along with the floating house carried by balloons and Russell’s energy, the movie wouldn’t be complete without Carl Fredericksen. The voice actor behind the grouchy character passed away on Monday. He was 91 years old.

On Asner’s Twitter account, a family member announced his passing in a short statement. It read, ‘We are sorry to say that our beloved patriarch passed away this morning peacefully. Words cannot express the sadness we feel. With a kiss on your head- Goodnight dad. We love you.’

Other users expressed their sadness and replied with sentiments that were tied to Asner’s character in Up. They said thank you for the adventure and how they will catch up with him in Paradise Falls. Another person’s tweet sums up what most people feel after hearing the news, ‘When certain stars pass that were part of your life growing up, there’s even more sadness associated with it.’

While Asner’s role in the beloved Disney movie is well known, he also performed as J. Jonah Jameson (1990s Spider-Man series), Hoggish Greedly (Captain Planet And The Planeteers), Ed Wuncler (The Boondocks), and a Jedi master in a Star Wars video game.

In a more recent film, Asner was part of Cobra Kai, posing as Johnny Lawrence’s stepfather. His wide range of TV credentials also includes his role as Lou Grant, the newsman on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. His other series include Rich Man, Poor Man, Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip, Roots, ER, and The Good Wife.

The voice actor will also appear in Up’s latest spin-off series Dug Days, a collection of shorts that follows the humorous misadventures of Dug the dog. It is set to roll out on Disney+ soon.
