Healthcare workers must receive their allowance before August ends
On Saturday, President Rodrigo Duterte finally addressed the issue of healthcare workers on their unreleased benefits. He instructed the Department of Health (DOH) and the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to release the special risk allowance (SRA) for them within 10 days.
Duterte stated that the DOH could use any funds the government has to compensate healthcare workers who are fighting against COVID-19. He added, ‘It’s an order, Secretary Duque, bayaran mo ‘yung mga hinihingi ng nurses, both in government and outside. Pag wala kang pera, gastusin mo lahat ng ano diyan.’
Last week, a group of medical frontliners from private and public hospitals considered carrying out a mass protest since DOH hasn’t released their benefits. These include allowances for their meal, transportation, SRA, and Active Hazard Duty Pay, among others.
Alliance of Health Workers (AHW) national president Robert Mendoza explained that the mass protest would be a way to express their complaints to the government regarding its failure to listen to them. He explained, ‘We are already drained and overworked. Many from our ranks file [for] early retirement, and many resigned for fear of being infected with the contagious virus, while others went abroad.’
The DBM confirmed on Monday that they could produce P311 million funds that the DOH needs to distribute to healthcare workers. DBM officer-in-charge Tina Canda said to ABS-CBN’s Teleradyo, ‘Marerelease naman yun bago ang 10 araw na palugit na binigay ni Presidente.’
