Mayor Belmonte reacts after the Internet congratulated her for an Olympic win
There have been many stories going around about the Tokyo Olympics apart from the actual sports updates. From anti-sex beds to entering the Twitterverse, people online spotted a new thing to give their attention to. US Swimmer Erica Sullivan’s photo recently circulated because of her resemblance to Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte.
Aquatic sports organization FINA (Fédération Internationale De Natation) posted Sullivan’s photo after her win on their Facebook page. Filipino users quickly spotted the photo and filled the comment section by playfully congratulating Mayor Belmonte.
Sullivan represents Team USA and is actually the first-ever Silver medalist in the women’s 1500-meter freestyle. She’s also the only openly gay swimmer on her team, and she’s a big fan of Taylor Swift, making her a certified Swiftie.
Mayor Belmonte claims to be thrilled by the comments and shared to GMA News Online, ‘It is a glorious compliment to have been physically likened to her, even jokingly in several memes.’
‘Not only has she brought honor to her beloved country through her victory, but I also learned that she proudly identifies herself as an asian-american and a member of the LGBTQI+ community,’ the mayor added. ‘She personifies inclusivity and diversity, two values I espouse and embrace.’
