Nas Daily proves Filipino nationalism is inconsistent AF

‘Filipino nationalism’ was on full display after Nas Daily, real name Nuseir Yassin, unleashed hell when he launched a mambabatok tattoo course on Nas Academy. There was no shortage of opinions, headlines, and essays condemning the act, as well as stances saying that, f*ck yes, our culture and identity are worth protecting.

It’s the type of ‘patriotism’ and ‘unity’ that would make our bolo-wielding, cedula-tearing ancestors blush, even if most of the furor is impulsive and irrational.

But as I write this, China is destroying PHP 200 billion worth of coral reefs in the West Philippine Sea. Another PHP 600 billion worth of fish have been poached from the same waters. That is PHP 800 billion in total damages caused by another ‘colonizer’.

And yet, the same patriotic furor cannot be found. Worse is the divisive atmosphere, where one half believes we should fight for what is ours, and the other says we are weak, so we might as well do nothing.

The worst is that many follow a leader who bows to his foreign master, who tolerates these incursions, while being more than willing to punish his own people. If we applied the same patriotic energy expended on Nas, none of this BS would fly.

And yet, here we are.

Is it all pretend?

Filipinos being united towards a common goal for the betterment of the nation is a good idea on paper. But we’ve proven to be inconsistent af.

Is it because our supposed ‘Filipino nationalism’ is just another term for bullying? We can roast Nas all day long because he’s just one man. But like all bullies, we bow down to someone far bigger, such as China and their defeatist puppet.

Is it because we think one aspect of our culture is weightier than the other? Do we think the preservation of a 1000-year-old tradition is more important than the lives of our fisherfolk? There should be no debate because both are essential.

Or does our nationalism all boil down to chismis, the mob mentality, or as the old saying goes, ‘nakikiuso’? Whang-Od is trending. The West Philippine Sea is not. Besides, likes, shares, and retweets are a helluva of a drug, so we might as well cash in our sympathy points.

Nas at least did us a favor for all of his controversies: he unintentionally exposed our hypocrisy. Not that we needed more evidence, mind you. We have always been a fickle society: quick to anger, gullible to false info, and prone to feeling ‘high and mighty’, despite our many, many faults.

But with this issue, our pettiness and false nationalism are on full display. We’re more than happy to roast a vlogger for being a ‘colonizer’, but we’ve long tolerated one that is just in our backyard.
