China’s napping elephants are returning to their habitat
This herd of fourteen elephants from China caught the attention of people online back in June. Now that they’re done with a 1,300-km (807-mile) trek, and napping in between their voyage, it’s time for them to head back to their safe habitat.
As mentioned by wildlife protection officials, the group of adorable giants safely crossed a bridge over the Yuan River. They are heading back to southwest China’s province, where a nature reserve managed by Puer city can be found.
Committee member Yang Yingyong also said that the migration route was “scientifically planned.” He said, ‘[We will] strive to allow the elephants to return to their habitat as soon as possible and thrive.’
On the other hand, provincial forestry commission head Wan Yong deployed over 25,000 police and staff and 1,500 emergency vehicles to monitor and feed the elephants. The move also ensures public safety.
Yong added that over 150,000 people were evacuated along the migration route. The insurance funds to cover property damage also reached more than 5 million yuan (approximately Php. 38,861,162).
Some reports said that the reason behind the elephants’ migration away from the protected habitat was uncertain. However, Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve chief engineer Shen Qingzhong said it is possible for them to travel north again in the future. He said, ‘The migration and spread of the Asian elephant population is inevitable.’
