Playing video games equates to 1000 sit ups, says study

More than just a casual hobby, playing video games can now nab you a gold medal or an opportunity to land a full-time scholarship. But apart from all those things, it apparently also helps you lose weight.

According to a study from esports platform Stakester, male gamers burn an average of 210 calories while women shed 236 after an hour of gameplay. The researchers used smart devices to track the respondents’ heart rates and energy consumption while they played Warzone and FIFA.

The volunteers were then asked to play for another hour, which then doubled the number of calories burned. According to the study, the activity was equal to 1000 sit ups.

Apparently, the calorie burn is due to the stress and pressure that one experiences in games that involve competition. Tom Fairey, CEO and founder of Stakester said‘We all know that competition increases our heart rate and most of us have experienced the “gaming sweat” that happens when you’re searching for a last-minute goal in FIFA or in a tight spot in Warzone.’

‘It’s no surprise that this burns calories,’ he added. ‘We’re surprised to see just how many is burned during a two-hour session, it certainly beats doing 1000 sit ups.’

While its results are interesting, the study doesn’t encourage gaming as an alternative to the good ‘ol practice of working out and eating healthy.
