Singapore’s Changi was dethroned as the world’s best airport
You’ve probably seen the Singapore Changi Airport during your travels or in the many Instagram posts of people you follow. After 8 years of reigning as the world’s best airport, Qatar’s Hamad International Airport (HIA) dethroned it and landed the first spot for 2021.
United Kingdom-based consultancy Skytrax released its annual list of the World’s Top 100 Airports. The results came from the rating of travelers worldwide. From being in the third spot last year, HIA climbed to the top, followed by Tokyo Haneda Airport, and Singapore’s Changi dropped at the third spot.
HIA’s position this year stemmed from obtaining the awards for the Best Airport in the Middle East, the World’s Best Airport in the 25 to 35 million Passenger category, and for the Best Airport Staff in the Middle East.
‘As travel hubs worldwide have been impacted by the pandemic, Hamad International Airport was undeterred by the global travel disruptions and continued with its expansion plans while introducing additional airport health and safety standards,’ said Edward Plaisted of Skytrax.

Skytrax also announced other accolades for several airports. Despite its drop, Changi was awarded World’s Best Staff. On the other hand, two of Japan’s airports received an award – Haneda was proclaimed the World’s Cleanest and Centrair Nagoya was the World’s Best Regional Airport. From 102nd place last year, Istanbul Airport was the World’s Most Improved as it rose to the 17th spot.
