The Philippines will have its best Olympic finish to date

A historic run

The Philippines is assured of its best medal finish since it joined the Olympic Games 97 years ago. Boxer Carlo Paalam sealed the record after besting Olympic champion Shakhobidin Zoirov in the semi-finals of the men’s flyweight division, assuring him of at least a bronze medal.

PH’s run at the Tokyo Games eclipses that of the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, where the country nabbed 3 bronzes, courtesy of Simeon Toribio (Athletics), Jose Villanueva (Boxing), and Teofilo Yldefonso (Swimming).

In comparison, 2021 saw PH’s first gold medal in weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, and medal finishes from boxers Nesthy Petecio (Gold/Silver), Eumir Marcial (Gold/Silver/Bronze), and Carlo Paalam (Gold/Silver/Bronze). Eum

Where are we now?

Before Paalam’s win, Eumir Marcial secured a medal after knocking out Armenia’s Arman Darchinyan. He will be up against Ukraine’s Oleksandr Khyzhniak next on August 5, Thursday. Meanwhile, Nesthy Petecio will try to win gold against Japan’s Sena Irie today at 12:05 PM.
