With 1 billion views, Rickroll will never die

An eternal classic

Few, if any, memes can boast the longevity that Rickrolling has enjoyed. It has been a consistent prank since it went mainstream in 2008, on a platform where trends and viral content barely go beyond their 15 minutes of fame.

As the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up reaches 1 billion views, it’s safe to say that Rick Astley and his dad dancing will be forever to stay. And why shouldn’t it? The song is undeniably catchy, your friend’s exasperation will always be priceless, the prank is harmless fun, and the MV reminds us of simpler times where people just did their thing without a care of what strangers online have to say.

‘The world is a wonderful and beautiful place, and I am very lucky’, said Astley, who called the milestone ‘amazing, crazy, wonderful!’.

Astley probably never expected his eternal impact on Internet culture when he released the single in 1987, but out of all the things that could’ve been immortalized, we’re happy that a wholesome song that promises to ‘Never gonna run around and desert you’ is the one that got picked.
