This 70-year-old ice vendor has recovered his termite-mutilated savings

Anyone who’s living off of a monthly paycheck would know that it takes a lot of time and effort to earn money. That’s why it would be a nightmare if something happens to it. In a similar situation, an ice delivery vendor recovered nearly P50,000 worth of savings that termites mutilated with the help of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).

The 70-year-old man named Adonis Buemia had been delivering ice for a living for three decades. With a daily income of P300, he saves one-third of it inside his cabinet. But it turns out that the termites entered his stash and got a taste of his savings before he did.

After the incident, Buemia commented on the Facebook page of a local TV program to seek help. The program then linked his case to BSP. The bank’s Currency Policy and Integrity Department (CPID) then pre-evaluated what was left of his disintegrated bills.

BSP Acting Deputy Director Nenette Malabrigo reached out to the bank that’s located near Buemia’s residence and endorsed his termite-infested cash for replacement.

‘On 11 August 2021, Mr. Buemia finally received the replacement of his cash savings,’ said the post of BSP. ‘To avoid damage caused by termites, water, and other elements, the BSP encourages the public to keep their savings in BSP-supervised financial institutions where they will be safe and secure.’

Over the years of working, Buemia also managed to save up and buy a house and a brand-new tricycle. He was also a solo parent and a primary caregiver to a special child.
