This Japanese roller coaster is so fast it leaves riders with broken bones
Amusement parks were probably one of your favorite places before the pandemic happened. While there are many cool attractions, the good ol’ roller coaster is a ride that you wouldn’t miss. But in Japan’s Fuji-Q Highland Park, its rollercoaster is suspended since several people who rode it ended up with broken bones.
Launched two decades ago, the Do-Dodonpa is considered the world’s fastest-accelerating roller coaster, navigating at a “super death” speed. It has the ability to go from zero to 112 miles per hour in just 1.56 seconds.
The amusement park’s press statement stated that passengers were injured on the roller coaster between December 2020 and August 2021. A spokesperson said to Vice World News that around six of the riders sustained bone fractures. Four of them broke their neck or back.
Osaka-based manufacturing firm Sansei Technologies was the one responsible for building the roller coaster. It explained that the relation of the passengers’ injuries and its machine has not yet been proven. The Yamanashi Prefecture and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism are currently conducting an investigation.
Meanwhile, architecture professor Naoya Miyasato who studies roller coaster designs, said that broken bone accidents are uncommon. He shared, ‘Roller coaster designs must all abide by government-approved standards, so the fact that there are multiple similar accidents is unusual.’
Miyasato also explained that no technical issues on the ride were reported, so other factors that could cause the injuries were its rapid acceleration and how passengers were sitting. He said, ‘If a person was sitting incorrectly, say with space between their backs and their seat, it’s the responsibility of the park employees to check their seating position.’
