A 1984 message in a bottle ended up in the PH and other countries
At one point during someone’s student life, they probably joined a club that was aligned with their interests. In a natural science club at Chosi High School, Japanese high school students released glass bottles in 1984 and 1985 as part of a project to investigate ocean currents. A total of 750 glass bottles were released in the ocean near Tokyo’s Miyakejima Island.
Throughout 37 years since the project launch, some bottles were found in the country’s local prefectures. But it had also reached other places abroad such as the Philippines, China, and the west coast of America. The most recent bottle was found on the island of Hawaii earlier in June.
A 9-year-old girl named Abbie Graham saw the bottle on the island’s beach, which contained postcard-zed contact forms written in Japanese, English, and Portuguese. It contains the reason behind why it was released off the coast and holds the contact details of the owner for the discoverer to seek.
The contact forms that were discovered in Hawaii were sent back to Choshi High School on September 3. Japanese students namely Nozomi Hakkaku and Asuka Yamaguchi who were deeply moved and decided to give appreciation letters to the young girl who found it. The two 16-year-olds also included a miniature catch flag as a souvenir to go with their written note.
The high school’s Vice Principal Jun Hayashi said at a briefing that he didn’t expect to encounter another bottle since the last time at Kikaijima Island in 2002. On the other hand, an OG member of the natural science club Mayumi Kanda shared, ‘I was surprised, it revived nostalgic memories of my high school days. I thank those involved.’
