A chess master is suing Netflix over a ‘sexist’ line in The Queen’s Gambit

When someone mentions The Queen’s Gambit, you’ll instantly picture Beth Harmon winning chess tournaments one after another. But apparently, the show presented false details in one of the chess match scenes. Netflix, the streaming service behind the show, is being sued by Soviet chess champion Nona Gaprindashvili for $5 million (approximately P250 billion) in a defamation lawsuit.

According to Deadline’s report, Gaprindashvili filed a case over a line of dialogue from when her real-life accomplishments were compared to Anya Taylor-Joy’s fictional character. ‘The only unusual thing about her, really, is her sex, and even that’s not unique in Russia,’ the commentator said during a white-knuckle match in Moscow. ‘There’s Nona Gaprindashvili, but she’s the female world champion and has never faced men.’

Meanwhile, the lawsuit stated that Gaprindashvili is a pioneer of women’s chess and a “much-loved icon” in Georgia. The complaint read, ‘Throughout her extraordinary career, she won many championships, beat some of the best male chess players in the world, and was the first woman in history to achieve the status of international chess grandmaster among men.’

Part of the 25-page defense also added that the allegation that Gaprindashvili has never faced men is false and “grossly sexist” and “belittling”. While The Queen’s Gambit’s last episode is set in 1968, the chess icon actually competed against 59 male chess players in the same year. Among those competitors are at least ten Grandmasters of that time.

The complaint added that Netflix was aware of the said facts since they hired consultants ranging from chess experts and historians, but it still “deliberately lied” about Gaprindashvili’s accomplishments  “for the cheap and cynical purpose of ‘heightening the drama.”

The streaming company released a response to the complaint and said, ‘Netflix has only the utmost respect for Ms. Gaprindashvili and her illustrious career, but we believe this claim has no merit and will vigorously defend the case.’
