Africa’s second tallest building might be built on artificial land

Many breathtaking views can be seen at the top of many high buildings. Tanzania’s AICL Group and Edinburgh’s Crowland Management Ltd., together with architecture and interior firm xCassia, recently unveiled their plans on creating Africa’s second-tallest building.

The Zanzibar Domino Commercial Tower is a 70-story spiral tower that will apparently be built on an artificial island at the autonomous archipelago of Zanzibar. Located 15 kilometers away from UNESCO’s World Heritage site of Stone Town, the dazzling design is intended to help attract tourists to the area after the pandemic hit the country’s local economy.

The 370,000 sqm mixed-use development is said to hold luxury hotels, apartments, a golf course, a wedding chapel, helipads, F&B outdoor areas, and a base for yachts and cruise ships.

xCassia founder Jean-Paul Cassia shared in a statement that the development of the design was first sketched in Paris back in 2009. He dreamed of building the project for over a decade while he was playing a round of dominos with his late father and two sons.

‘Between its innate mathematical order and geometries found in nature, its pure lines and proportions that evoke growth, progress and freedom, it had all the bearings of an icon anyone could remember and draw on a paper napkin,’ he added. ‘All it lacked was the right visionary investor and site to make it come true.’
