Cuba is the first country to jab 2-year-old kids against COVID-19

Different countries worldwide are still working on vaccinating most of the people in their nation against COVID-19. Meanwhile, Cuba is focusing on the younger population as they are now the first country to jab children starting from two years old against the virus.

The inoculation campaign for children rolled out on Friday, starting with those aged 12 and above. It began distributing vaccines for those who are in the 2 to 11 age group in Cienfuegos on Monday. The country already finished clinical trials on minors with local jabs Abdala and Soberana. But these home-grown shots aren’t recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO).

While countries like the United Arab Emirates, Venezuela, and China have declared their plans to vaccinated younger children, Cuba is the first to push through with the plan. Many other countries worldwide are also jabbing children from the age of 12, and some are still undergoing trials on younger kids.

Cuba has a population of around 11.2 million, and it strives to inoculate all the children before reopening schools that have been temporarily closed since March 2020. At the moment, its students will learn via television programs during the new school year since most of the homes don’t have internet access.

The Cuban government stated that learning institutions would slowly reopen in October and November, but only until all the children have been vaxxed. The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) urged schools worldwide to resume as soon as possible, as “the long-term costs of closures are too high and hard to justify.”
