Chel Diokno is running for senator, which is awesome
They say that getting second chances are rare, and you should make the most of it when you do. On Wednesday night, human rights lawyer Chel Diokno announced that he will run for a senate position again in the 2022 Philippine elections.
‘Yes, I have decided that I will be running for senate,’ Diokno declared in an interview with One News’ The Chiefs program. ‘Sa nagyon po ako ay isang independent. I have not joined or allied or affiliated with any particular political party.’
Diokno also shared on his social media pages the reason why he’s giving another shot for the senate seat, ‘Napakaraming bagay and hindi patas dito sa atin – sa batas, sa ekonomiya, sa mga patakaran sa COVID. Gawin nating mag makatarungan and buhay ng Pilipino.’

During the 2019 campaign, the son of anti-Marcos icon Jose W. “Ka Pepe” Diokno failed to clinch a spot and ranked at 21. His fellow members from the partylist Otso Diretso also didn’t make it to the race of 12. It was the first time in 80 years for the opposition to lose a legislative seat.
Throughout Diokno’s years of serving the people, he sits as the chairperson of the Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG). It is the largest group of lawyers in the country that represents opposition lawmakers, human rights lawyers, Framers of the Consitution, and journalists. He also launched the Free Legal Assistance Desk through his Facebook page.
Diokno’s platform centers around justice and the COVID-19 response. It includes:
- Delivery of health services to Filipinos
- Small to medium enterprises badly-hit by the pandemic and, according to Diokno, neglected by the Duterte administration
- Children’s denied right to education due to the pandemic and the slow-paced vaccination program
‘Chel Diokno’ quickly trended on Twitter when news on his running broke out last night. A user said he shouldn’t be the Filipinos’ TOTGA again, while another one shared their thoughts on what’s needed for his senatorial campaign.
People were also surprised when local celebrity Vice Ganda posted a video as he repeatedly mentioned the attorney’s name. Other popular figures who have a big following also endorsed Diokno’s decision, such as Enchong Dee and Saab Magalona.
While the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) believes that TikTok is a way to educate the youth on voting, Diokno actually has his own page on the platform. His content revolves around short videos on legal questions and fun content of him sharing his fave cauliflower rice recipe.
Pilipinas, wag na ulit natin gawing TOTGA si Chel Diokno :(((

What Chel Diokno actually needs is help on his campaign funds! His popularity needs to transcend social media and we need to introduce him to more people. He needs TV and radio commercials and they require huge funding. Hope we are ready when he calls for support!
