EJ Obiena will receive P250,000 for achieving new national record

It’s only been a few days since Filipino pole vaulter EJ Obiena set a new record for the Philippines when he cleared a 5.91-meter mark at the Paris Diamond League. Aside from a silver medal, the finish also led the Olympian to receive Php. 250,000 from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

PSC chairman William “Butch” Ramirez said to Rappler that the sports agency already confirmed the cash incentive on Tuesday. Meanwhile, PSC acting executive director Atty. Guillermo Iroy said it would be awarded to Obiena once the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association officially certifies his achievement.

‘Yes, under the law he is qualified but we are waiting for the report of the NSA (national sports association) to certify officially the new record,’ Iroy explained to PhilStar.

The pole vaulter’s award is under Section 8 of the Republic Act 10699 or the expanded National Athletes, Coaches, and Trainers Benefits and Incentives Act of 2001. It states, ‘national athletes and other athletes who surpass Philippine record or ranking in any measurable international sports competition shall be given cash incentives, the amount of which may be determined by the PSC.’

The 25-year-old pole vaulter also represented the country during the recent 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where he finished at 11th place. He was the only Asian participant who powered through the final but didn’t make it to the top 10 after missing to clear 5.80m in three attempts. But he was able to clear the 5.70m mark after three tries.
