Lumpiang Shanghai is the best Filipino food, Balut the worst says global survey
The Philippines has a lot of excellent dishes to offer. From the usual daily staple to street food, everyone has their personal faves. When TasteAtlas posted that sinigang was the best-rated vegetable soup last month, most Filipinos can’t help but agree. The international food website posted another list, but this time it covered the best and worst food in the country.
Claiming the spot as the best Filipino food is lumpiang shanghai. The website explained that the crispy deep-fried Filipino snack evolved from Chinese spring rolls and its savory fillings include ground pork or beef with carrots, onions, various seasonings, and (occasionally) shrimps.
The worst one might stir a debate, but it’s none other than the good ol’ balut. The description says that this delicacy is regarded as an “aphrodisiac” that is usually paired with a cold beer on the side. It can also be seasoned with chili, garlic, vinegar, salt, lemon juice, ground pepper, and mint leaves.

Great – sisig (4.4), adobo (4.3), and lechon (4.2)
OK – daing (3.8), pinangat (3.6), torta (3.6)
Worst – balut (2.6), dinuguan (3.3), and pinipig (3.3)
Taste Atlas is described as an “encyclopedia of flavors, a world atlas of traditional dishes, local ingredients, and authentic restaurants.” Its website shows an interactive map that allows users to search for what to eat and the best places to try out cuisines. It has classified over 10,000 foods and drinks, with dozens of thousands that it has yet to research and place on its map.
