Third time’s the charm: Neri Colmenares will run for senate in 2022
September has brought the Filipinos many surprises when it comes to candidates running for the 2022 Philippine Elections. Politicians have been releasing announcements and putting out their commercial jingles. Joining the race for the third time, human rights lawyer Neri Colmenares aims to clinch a seat in the senate.
Colmenares confirmed the news on his official Twitter page on Thursday morning. He said, ‘Sana po maisama ako sa inyong listahan.’
The current Bayan Muna chairman explained that the officers and leaders of Makabayan urged him to run in an interview with ANC. He added, ‘I will run for the Senate seat in 2022 if only to deliver the sharpest message of critique to the candidate of President Duterte.’
‘I’m not saying that the other senatorial candidates will not deliver on their job,’ he pointed out. ‘We’re just saying that we’re going to contribute in the discourse to expose the lies of President Duterte.’

Colmenares has yet to release an official legislative agenda to be part of his platform, but he mentioned that it would include higher wages and regularization for workers, genuine agrarian reform for farmers, peasants, indigenous people, protecting the West Philippine Sea, senior citizens, and the youth.
The senatorial bet also said that he would carry out a better COVID-19 response. He said, ‘We will treat this pandemic as a public health emergency, not a peace and order issue that Duterte treated it.’
Colmenares first ran for senate in 2016 but ranked 20th. He took another chance in 2019 but placed 24th during the race for 12, where none of the opposition candidates scored a legislative seat for the first time in 80 years.
