This university will launch a course on Drake and The Weeknd

Did you ever have a fave subject in school? Your reason could probably be getting an easy A or it’s something you’re genuinely interested in, but not because the topic was about artists you stan. Students at X University in Toronto (formerly known as Ryerson University) will soon get a chance to attend a class that centers on Drake and The Weeknd.

The media course is called Deconstructing Drake and The Weekend, which will explore the music scene that produced the two Toronto artists and the factors that helped create their success. It will also analyze the representation and infrastructure problems in the Canadian music scene to understand why the two megastars took their craft to the U.S. in an effort to ‘make it’.

While the class may seem interesting on its own, it wouldn’t be complete without a professor. Dalton Higgins, a well-known author, publicist, and podcaster, will carry out the lecture on the new subject when it starts next semester in early 2022. He’s also a music professor-in-residence at The Creative School, the faculty where the course is included.

Higgins shared in a statement that the U.S. colleges and universities teach a variety of courses about rock, folk, pop artists, like Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Bruce Springsteen, etc., so it’s only apt to have a course about the two Canadian rap and R&B icons in Toronto.

‘When you have two Black artists born and bred in Toronto who perform rap, R&B and pop, and who are arguably well on their way to becoming billionaires at some point in time, there is apparently a lot to learn,’ he added. ‘Remember, they both blew up despite being products of a local Canadian music scene that does very little to foster the growth of its Black music practitioners.’
