This Japanese artist uses tweezers to make life-like cardboard sculptures

Every artist has their own special way of crafting their work. Some use paint, oil pastel, colored pencils, or even produce art digitally. When it comes to Monami Ohno, her unusual choice of medium is cardboard. If that comes as a surprise, wait until you hear that she mostly uses a long pair of tweezers to complete her work.

The Japanese creative’s has been creating cardboard figures over the past decade. She started using this type of material back when she had a college project. Her pieces were inspired by pop culture, McDonald’s meal, anime robots, models of tanks, a life-sized gun, a dollar bill, and fighter jets. She also used tiny pieces of hard paper to create the scales of her Godzilla sculpture.

The artist shared with Reuters her cardboard art experience. She explained that creating this kind of piece made her happy, ‘When I first tried folding the paper, gluing and putting them together, the people around me praised me, saying things like ‘Wow, you can make this.’

Ohno explained her art process starts by sketching a rough design on cardboard. She then provides the measurements until it’s cut, then molds it into the desired shape with the help of glue and water. She said, ‘I make the things I would really like to decorate my house with.’

The 29-year-old’s creations are usually sold at a whopping price of $900 to $13,00 (approximately P45,000 to P650,000) per piece. Her unique sculpture has also been displayed in galleries located in her country and abroad.

While she uses cardboard, the artist reveals that she’s not making an environmental statement. But she said, ‘It would be nice if people can see my work, which is made out of cardboard and recycled materials rather than plastics, and realize that there are these kinds of people who are involved in recycling.’
